Assignment 2A
Assignment Objectives
1. Ability to create or use an externally hosted and managed web site.
2. Ability to create more complex XHTML and publish to site.
3. Ability to create valid and well-formed XHTML in publication.
Assignment Requirements
Assignment must be submitted on an accessible web server. You may use one of the servers provided for the class which will require configuration. You may also use an external hosting service. You may not use a MySpace or another hosting service with built-in tools to perform this exercise.
Each student must first create a class home page. You will be modfiying this home page and adding links to assignments from it during the course of the semester. The only thing this home page should contain at present is (you will add more later);
- The name of the class
- A link to your personal information page
Next each student must create a small personal web site with multiple pages that has basic information about you and;
- Contains a picture (or pictures) of you
- Information about hobbies (simple info)
- Information about work (where, what do you do)
- Contact information (email, IM)
- A page of personal links (sites you visit, etc...)
To submit the assignment you should submit a working link to your VALID HTML file. If you submit a file that has a URL pointing to a file or to WebCT you will NOT get credit for this assignments (which will be sad as it is the easiest assignment). Your personal page can be at any location. For this assignment (only) no late assignments will be accepted - and the uploaded file must be valid. Be sure to use correct form for all of your XHTML pages, these pages should validate.
Estimated Completion
2-20 hours, very wide range due to levels of experience of the students.
Hosting Choices
If you have an external hosting service you are free to use this. If not here are some choices below;
UCF Pegasus Server
Google Apps ($10)
GoDaddy ($6.99-$9.99)
I highly recommend GoDaddy for this assignment, especially if you plan on taking additional courses in databases or web programming as it supports the the requirements of those courses. Also I recommend you select a domain name that you will want to use into the future - including job interviews.

Questions
Where can I find servers that I can use for this assignment?
1. You may use one of the ENT servers that are located in ENGR I room 183. You will need to obtain a key card to have access to this room, please come to ENGR room 207 and get with Ronee to obtain the card access. Once you gain access you will need to work with Larry Bales to access the server. Once he has you on the server you are free to start using it for the class.
2. You may use the pegasus or other servers on campus for posting of assignments.
3. You may set up your own domain for this. I recommend doing this and finding and registering a domain name just for the experience of having done it. I have a large number of domains that I have registered. Google Apps sells doains for $10, GoDaddy.com runs specials for $1.99 on a regular basis.
4. You can get together (as a group) and register a domain or use an existing server.
5. You can work with other students who have registered domains and servers already hosting and use these.
6. You can use any server that you have at work as long as your company does not mind.
What if I do not want to use my real name due to security ?
That is fine - make a note in the submission in Web Courses that you are using a fake name or alias and submit with that information.
