Assignment 1A

Assignment Objectives

1. Use common collaborative web editing tools - in this case a wiki.

2. Be able to create simple XHTML within a web site.

3. Be able to organize a large group of people working together on a collaborative site.

Estimated Time for Completion

10-20 hours

Assignment Requirements

This assignment will get you started in creating HTML and building web pages. This is a relatively easy assignment. First you will go to the public wiki site Trailmaps.pbwiki.com - the invite key for this wiki is maps). You may use another site - but must still meet the requirements of the assignment.

About the wiki you are using

The trailmaps wiki was created to both provide useful information about parks and trails, but also as a first assignment for this class. On this site you will see the work of past students that have taken this course.

Using trail maps wiki http://trailmaps.pbwiki.com ;

1. Create or use an existing county pages (for any county) - if you adopt a page be sure to put your name on that page to keep other students from over-writing your work. You will do this by following the site naming convention (please read this). If there are multple County pages - you will need to consolidate all materials from the various county pages to a single County Page by copying. For example there should a single page for Seminole County

http://trailmaps.pbwiki.com/Florida+-+Seminole+County

Before you start the assignment there are multiple under different student names such as

http://trailmaps.pbwiki.com/Florida+-+Seminole+County+-+Dale+Picou

http://trailmaps.pbwiki.com/Seminole+County+-+CET-4583+-+Dustin+Delago

http://trailmaps.pbwiki.com/Florida-Seminole+County+-+Christopher+Butler

The materials from these pages should be consolidated onto the one single page. So if you choose to do a park in Seminole County - that will be your responsibility. If multiple people use the same County (which is fine) - the quality of that page will be reflected in the grades of each student - regardless of who contributed.

2. Each County page should have links to external or internal pages. Also basic information about the county should be there. A map of the county is usually a nice touch. I will be grading based upon attractiveness of your ENTIRE group of pages.

3. Create a new page (one) within the wiki for a park and area within the chosen county. This is your page. You MUST be able to navigate by links from the site home page, to your specific park. You must create the entire chain of links to go from the front page - to your park specific page. Front Page - State - County - Park (your page)

I have created a lot of sample pages for you to look at under Seminole County.

4. Record the URL of the park page you adopted and the detail page you created. This URL will be submtted in your assignment in the comments.

Your pages should contain at a minimum;

  •  A list (unordered or ordered) (Example)
  •  One or more images on the page with a mapped link (Example)
  •  An internal link within a page (internal HREF) (Example)
  •  A link to an external page at another site.
  •  Text formatting, using header levels for page organization. (Example)

In addition the park page must contain a breadcrumb navigation in the top left corner of the page with links back through the entire chain to the home page. FOr an example of this take a look at this page. Remember the exisiting heirarchy is Home - State - County - Park

I will be looking for well formed html in this assignment. Do NOT rely on the wiki editor to do this (it won't) use the source button (in the editor) and check your xhtml. The editor does not do a perfect job of forming the xhtml - so don't rely on it.

5. (NOT REQUIRED) You will also validate this xhtml through the W3C Validation Service at http://validator.w3.org/ . To validate simply use the view source in the wiki in the wiki and paste that source code into the validator. Use the Validate by Direct Input tab and validate for XHTML 4.01 Strict. You can do this by using the More Options selection and selecting to Validate HTML Fragment. This will use the strict by default. This will allow you to paste the code you have written for the assignment and not have to validate the entire page. Only validate the code that you have written. To copy the code use the Source button in the wiki editor to show the source, this is the code you wil copy into the validator.

What you will turn in -

Submit only a link URL to your park page. I will follow the breadcrumb navigation to all the other pages.

Time Estimates

This assignment typically takes about 10 hours. This time may be a bit shorter for students with html experience, however the development of the pages still requires time to do well. Also make sure you check up on your page prior to the due date - this is a wiki and students have altered completed pages in the past.

Grading Criteria

1 pt - Ability to create and name page correctly

1 pt - Full links from home page to created page

2 pt - Bread crumb navigation

1 pt - List formed correctly

2 pt - Correct Image map

1 pt - Internal link (can be on page linking to park)

1 pt - External link

1 pt - Correct formatting

Question and Answers

Q: How do I get an account to create pages on trailmaps?

A: You will need to first "Request an Account" on pbworks - while that part is pretty easy, the next step is you need to set up to use the trailmaps workspace.  After you login, you should be able to click on the account (button or word)  in the account area there are 3 tabs, click on the Home tab. At the bottom right you will be able to enter a workspace in "Join A Workspace" in here enter the Trailmaps and hit submit. You will be now be able to edit and create pages in Trailmaps.
